cjolliffe Jamie wishes in woody timbres
Shades of bebop masters in his pick stroke
Prospecting for gold in close harmony
While bent notes spill off dented tins
Visions of Rosa’s generous shelves in the Heights
Dan’s bumps and sizzles, and Stephan sneaker stepping sure footed through the dream
Saudade, wine swept chords, the presence of absence,
So says the dictionary and Jamie note-wise
I feel better. And sadder.

about

“I Wish” is a collection of 8 original tunes and one cover of a timeless standard. My longtime colleagues and friends Stephan Crump (bass) and Dan Reiser (drums) and I got together in Brooklyn for a few days of recording a while back. Although all the songs are instrumentals they are reflections of aspects of my life. “I Was Three” is inspired by my love of Ornette Coleman’s music. “Rosa” is for my very dear friend Rosa Naparstek, with whom I made the big scary move to New York City. “Laughing Girl” is for a someone who loved to do just that, “E” is dedicated to the late brother of a close friend. “New Do” commemorates a haircut (not mine)! “Prospect” reminds me of walks in Prospect Park, “Phooey” has a playful mood, and “I Wish” has a feeling of longing, regret, hope, and perhaps what Brazilians call saudade. “Beautiful Love” is just fun to play and was a spontaneous choice for a tune to get loose on.

The other musicians have a long list of accomplishments as befits their originality and artistry. Stephan performs with Vijay Iyer, Jen Chapin, Ches Smith, Rez Abbasi, Liberty Ellman and many others. I have the pleasure of being a member of Stephan’s Rosetta Trio.

Dan, in addition to being a wonderful jazz drummer, has played and recorded with musicians from many walks of the musical life. These include Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Jim Campilongo, Valerie June, Richard Julian, Chris Lightcap, Jen Chapin, Jenny Scheinman, Meshell Ndegeocello, and…well, you get the idea.
